:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lizzy -- Liked the Kindle version so much, I ordered the hard copy : I don't remember how I learned about this amazing baker, but I found her cookbook. I decided to order the Kindle version because I wasn't sure about adding another cookbook to my already bulging collection. Well, it downloaded last night and I was totally enmeshed in it within minutes. The author wove stories about herself, her background, her family as well as tips and hints for creating her recipes. She has included pictures of each dish. The directions are clear and easy to follow. I can't wait to try some of them. I liked the quick skim through so much that I ordered the hard back version to make it easier to find recipes. I know I will not be disappointed with anything I try from this book. The recipes are clear (measurements given in volume and weight (cups/grams)), they don't usually require ingredients you don't have (although some specialty cookware is require for, say, madeleines), and some substitutions are offered (like, the option to use a store-bought pie crust. Not snooty!). There are french classics, southern classics, unique showstoppers, unfussy, everyday desserts, breads... I've made several breakfast items and cookies... going through a cookie phase I guess, and I plan to bake through the pies this holiday season. I have yet to try any of the donuts but I've seen lots of successful donut posts on the author's insta - foodieinnewyork. You can tell the author truly has heart and it comes through in the bakes. More than that I love how the author incorporates some of her life stories throughout the book. I love how she talks about growing up in Louisiana. It adds a great personal touch that feels like you are baking with a friend. So far I have tried two of the recipes. The cinnamon rolls which came out perfectly. I also tried the brownies which were amazing, my family absolutely loved them. I appreciate the easy to understand, writing of the recipes. Her personal stories make this book so vibrant and so inspiring! Not to mention the photography is just gorgeous. I love the family photos and all the history behind many of her recipes. I never thought I’d say a baking book is a page turner but this one just keeps me wanting to read more and more, and I cannot wait to try ALL of the recipes! Highly recommend. We have lots of cookbooks in our house (my wife if a foodie) but none has ever held the interest of our kids, except this one! They want to bake everything in it.
